Why it matters: the foundational focus area for the whole subject — plate tectonics theory here underpins Australia's Geological and Energy Resources (how ore deposits form) and comes back directly in Year 12's Natural Hazards (earthquake/volcano locations) and Evolving Earth (continental positioning vs climate).
